The most nominated male artist was Eminem, which bagged eight nominations following the success of his newest album “Recovery”, while Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber got his first nomination in the best new artist category for the music video of smash single, “Baby.”
Upcoming singer Ke$ha joined experts Usher, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys Jay-Z and indie band Florence and the Machine among the other set of nominees.
In the popular video of the year category, Lady Gaga has two entries, which includes, “Telephone” with Beyonce and Bad Romance where her rivalry includes Eminem for “Not Afraid” and rapper B.o.B for “Airplanes”.
Lady Gaga said in a statement, “I’m so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I’m even more proud it’s an unlucky number; 13.”
She also added, “A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for 3 reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous. Thank You MTV!”
Eminem noted mockingly that the award show went down in the middle of his U.S. tour. He said, “Apparently MTV does not care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs,” adding up “I mean, I will be there but don’t expect me to be nice about it.”
Starting on Tuesday audience can vote for the universal categories on website vma.mtv.com and voting by text message for the best new artist will go on all the way through showtime on September12.
